DRG Grouper

How to use the DRG Grouper tab to calculate diagnosis-related group assignments from ICD and OPS codes.

DRG Grouper

The Grouper tab lets you calculate DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) assignments by entering diagnosis and procedure codes. This is the primary tool for determining case classification and estimated reimbursement under the German G-DRG system.

Opening the Grouper

  1. Open a workspace with medical coding enabled.
  2. Click the + button in the tab bar to add a new tab.
  3. Select Grouper from the tab type menu.

Entering Codes

The Grouper interface has two main input sections:

Diagnoses

  • Enter ICD-10-GM codes in the diagnosis fields.
  • The first field is the principal diagnosis (HD) — this is the main reason for the hospital stay.
  • Additional fields are for secondary diagnoses (ND) — comorbidities and complications.
  • You can search by code or by text description.

Procedures

  • Enter OPS codes in the procedure fields.
  • Each procedure can include a date for accurate grouping.
  • You can search by code or by text description.

Grouping Results

After entering your codes, click Group to calculate the result. The output includes:

  • DRG Code — The assigned diagnosis-related group.
  • DRG Description — Human-readable description of the DRG.
  • Partition — Medical (M), Surgical (O), or Other (A).
  • PCCL — Patient Clinical Complexity Level.
  • Relative Weight — The cost weight used for reimbursement calculation.
  • Mean Length of Stay — Expected average hospital days for the DRG.

Using AI Assistance

Your AI agent can help with grouping by:

  • Suggesting additional codes that might affect the DRG assignment
  • Explaining why a particular DRG was assigned
  • Comparing different coding scenarios and their reimbursement impact

Simply ask your agent in the chat panel while the Grouper tab is open.
