What Is Medical Coding?

An overview of the medical coding tools in PropellerDeck, including DRG grouping, ICD/OPS coding, and clinical decision support.

What Is Medical Coding?

PropellerDeck includes a suite of medical coding tools designed for hospitals and healthcare organizations in the German DRG system. These tools help coders, physicians, and case managers work more efficiently with diagnosis and procedure codes.

Core Capabilities

The medical coding module provides:

  • DRG Grouper — Calculate DRG assignments from diagnosis and procedure codes. See DRG Grouper for details.
  • ICD & OPS Browser — Search and browse the ICD-10-GM and OPS catalogs directly within the platform. See ICD & OPS Browser.
  • Case Management — Review and manage patient cases with integrated coding workflows. See Case Management.
  • AI-Assisted Coding — Use AI agents with specialized medical knowledge to suggest codes, validate grouping results, and answer clinical coding questions.

How It Works

Medical coding tools are available as specialized tabs within your workspace. When you open a workspace with medical coding enabled, you will see additional tab types in the tab menu:

  • Grouper Tab — Enter diagnosis and procedure codes to calculate DRG and reimbursement estimates.
  • Segmenter Tab — Analyze and segment clinical data for coding purposes.
  • P21 Data Tab — Work with §21 data exports for case-level analysis.

AI Integration

Your AI agent has access to medical coding tools and can assist with:

  • Looking up ICD-10-GM and OPS codes by description
  • Calculating DRG grouping results
  • Explaining coding rules and guidelines
  • Validating code combinations
  • Researching medical literature for coding decisions

To configure your agent for medical coding, see Configuring Your Agent.
